Marble Arch Cottage, Marble Arch, King Street, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 6HD

This is one of the most iconic buildings in Knutsford. The blue plaque outside proclaims ‘This was once a coaching inn, thought to have been known as The Mermaid. It then became The Angel before the inn’s removal to the opposite side of the street.’

It remained The Angel until about 1710: the mounting block can still be noted.

Fans of Mrs Gaskell will be interested to know that in ‘Cranford’, Lord Maulever stayed here while visiting Captain Brown whose own “humble household could not entertain such an august personage.”

It is a private home, so this is a special opportunity to enjoy a guided tour given by the owners themselves.
