The Imitation Game (2014) is the hugely successful Academy Award-winning spy drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch that is based on the biography Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges. It is widely credited for bringing awareness of Turing’s legacy to a broader audience. It is set during WW2, when MI6 recruited mathematicians to crack German codes. Enigma was thought to be unbreakable but, working in secrecy from Hut 8 at Bletchley Park, Turing and his team eventually succeed in building a machine – the Bombe – to break the code. The screening of the film is being introduced by Professor Jonathan Swinton who will give an insight into Turing’s work in Manchester after WW2.
