Alison Uttley (1894-1976) may be best known for her children’s books such as Little Grey Rabbit and Sam Pig but she was a scientist too – the second woman ever to graduate from The University of Manchester with a degree in Physics in 1906. She is, like Gaskell, a grande dame of British literature.
